The Treaty Debates

ISL

Watch in

In December 1921 and January 1922, Dáil Éireann debated the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The Dáil voted to ratify the Treaty by a small margin.

A delegation from the Dáil had spent two months in London negotiating the Treaty, following the truce of July 1921. The Treaty established the Irish Free State as a self-governing dominion but fell short of the Republic that had been declared on the steps of the GPO in 1916.

International newspaper coverage

The international media coverage of the Treaty Debates showed a positive view of the terms of the Treaty. Even where some of the terms were considered unfair many saw it as an acceptable means of bringing an end to the terrible violence of the previous few years.

Secondary schools educational resources

We have produced four resources to help post-primary history students engage with the text of the Treaty Debates. Each resource focuses on one TD who spoke during the debates and includes activities for Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Senior Cycle students.

Secondary schools history competition
